I’m sitting in a cafe in London, where my friend and I have been hanging out for about an hour.
We’re sitting on a sofa and chatting about how much we love the English language and how much of a weirdo we are.
I ask him if he’s a big fan of the band.
I tell him he’s probably a big follower of the Beatles.
He nods and says, “They were good.
I’ve never seen them live, but they’re good.”
I tell my friend that I was once in a band with them.
He says, he was in a similar band with the Beatles, but he never really liked them.
“They’re not really that interesting,” he says.
“I like them because they’re not so into the world.”
“I used to be in a small band called The Sirens, and we had the same drummer and bassist,” he continues.
“He was an American who used to play guitar and keyboards.
We had this weird relationship, where he would come to the UK and we’d go back to the States.
So he’d come back to me and say, ‘You know, I think we should record a song together.’
So I wrote it, and it went to No. 1 in the charts for the UK.
I’d write some songs and he’d say, “OK, I’ll do the bass,” and I’d do the vocals, and he would do the drums, and I would do everything.”
In the end, he ended up going on to form the band The Saws.
I ask him what it’s like being in a room full of such a great group of people.
“You just know that this is a good band, because they always come together and sing songs together.
They’re not too shy about it.
They’ve always had a real good time.
I can’t imagine being in the room with a lot of people who are like this.
I think that’s a wonderful thing.”
The next day, the Sirens release their first full-length, “Fifty Years,” which is one of my favorite songs in the band’s catalog.
“It’s so dark, but it’s beautiful,” says ZweIG.
“I always like to have the songs that are dark and sad and weird, but I also like to write the songs I want to hear when I’m in the studio, and so it’s nice to be able to say, OK, let’s put it out there, because I don’t want to get it wrong, but you can’t get the songs wrong.
You just have to write good ones.”
“We’re going to be doing a new record, so I don`t want to say too much more than that,” says drummer Tom Baker.
“But yeah, I hope you all enjoy it.”
