You may be an NFL fan, but the number of times you’ve heard that the phrase “team lost” has become synonymous with “this team lost.”
If you’re one of those people, it’s because of how many of you grew up watching the Patriots and Cowboys play in the NFC East.
The Cowboys are gone.
The Patriots are in.
The Jets are in the AFC East.
And the Eagles and the Bills have not made the playoffs since 2012.
It’s not that they’re bad teams.
But they’re not winning.
They’re not even in the hunt.
The Patriots, who are currently 10-3, were beaten by the Eagles 38-17 on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
It was a brutal, gut-wrenching loss for a team that’s been struggling for much of the year.
This was a team built on defense.
It’s a team with a defensive coordinator in Bill Belichick, who has developed a reputation as a tactician.
The Pats, though, don’t have a defensive-minded coach.
The Eagles, by contrast, have a coordinator who has won four Super Bowls.
The Eagles have an offense that is the envy of all of America’s teams.
The defense is elite.
And the offensive line has been among the best in the NFL.
The Jets are still in the division, but they have a chance to make it three straight games before the playoffs are officially called.
That’s what it feels like to be the No. 1 seed and not making the playoffs.
But there’s hope.
This is a team in the middle of the pack, not in the top five, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index, and it has a young quarterback who could be the best quarterback in the league next season.
The only question is how far they’ll get from there.
I grew up in New England and I’m going to be in a situation where I’ve got to be able to put my hand up and say, “I’m going here, and I don’t care where I go,” but I’ve never felt like I’m stuck in New York, and that’s what I’ll have to do.
The Giants are in a position where they can’t afford to lose a quarterback, even if they could.
They already have Matt Moore, who was acquired in a trade with the Bears for cornerback Eli Apple.
But their top draft pick, cornerback Eli Harold, is out for the year with a torn ACL.
The defense has been the bedrock of the team since 2006, when it was still the Patriots, and the offense has been at the heart of it.
The best running back in the world in LeGarrette Blount is gone.
The offense is going to need to be better in the second half of the season, but it has the talent to make up for lost time.
The quarterback position is a major concern.
The Giants are trying to find a new quarterback, but none of them are a lock.
They’ll have a few choices this offseason, and they’ll have some decisions to make.
The Bills are in no position to lose their best player and are on the cusp of the postseason.
The Cowboys are the only team left with a franchise quarterback, and owner Jerry Jones is hoping to bring him back.
But Dallas is also missing two of its most important players, wide receiver Dez Bryant and linebacker Myles Jack.
The Panthers are in rebuilding mode, but coach Ron Rivera has a proven track record as a quarterback coach.
His Panthers have won 10 of their last 13 games and are a playoff team with the potential to make the postseason again next year.
The Steelers are in similar rebuilding mode and have a franchise-record five wins.
But it has been a disappointing season, as they’re currently 13-23.
The Titans are the first team in NFL history to have both a franchise QB and a franchise passer go down at the same time.
But the Titans have struggled offensively and are still searching for their first winning season since the 2006-07 season.
The Redskins, like the Cowboys, are a little bit of a puzzle.
The offense is still young and talented, but Washington is entering the final year of a 10-year, $140 million contract extension with quarterback Kirk Cousins.
The Lions have a talented offense and a young defensive coordinator.
They are hoping to get better on the offensive side of the ball this season, and this could be their year.
But Detroit will need to add more pieces to a roster that’s missing its top two players, linebacker DeAndre Levy and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
If you were going to go with the Bills over the Giants, you would be a fool.
But this team has a lot of heart, and if they can find a way to find some chemistry and chemistry with a quarterback who’s coming off a season that was a complete disaster, it could be one of the better teams in the National Football
